Common Questions
Frequently Asked
What should I bring to a first consultation?
There is no strict requirement. Bringing any documents already in your possession — such as a marriage certificate, existing agreements, or correspondence — can be helpful. If you have nothing to hand, that is perfectly fine. The first conversation is primarily about listening and understanding your situation.
How long does a family matter typically take in Thailand?
Timelines vary considerably depending on the nature of the matter. A straightforward mutual separation can sometimes be formalised within a few weeks. Contested proceedings involving children or property can take several months to over a year. We will give you an honest picture of the likely range once we understand your situation.
Is everything I share kept confidential?
Yes. Attorney-client confidentiality applies from the moment you speak with us. Nothing you share during a consultation or engagement is disclosed without your consent. This applies to all staff and associates at Ruan Law.
Can foreign nationals access family law services in Thailand?
Yes. A significant portion of our clients are expatriates or international couples with ties to Thailand. Thai family law applies where parties are registered in Thailand or where the matter falls under Thai jurisdiction. We will clarify whether Thai courts have jurisdiction at the outset.
What are the costs involved and are they fixed?
Our three services are priced at ฿4,600 (consultation), ฿9,500 (mediation support), and ฿18,000 (full representation). These figures are clear starting points; more complex matters may involve additional fees, which we will explain in advance — never after the fact.
Do I need to visit your office in person?
Initial consultations can be arranged in person at our Silom Road office or via a secure video call, whichever is more comfortable for you. Some stages of formal proceedings do require in-person attendance, which we will explain clearly when relevant.
