Our Story

How Ruan Law Came to Be

Ruan Law was established in Bangkok after its founder recognised a gap that many families quietly experience: legal offices that handle matters competently but feel cold, rushed, or hard to understand. The name — ruan, the Thai word for house — was chosen deliberately. A house should feel welcoming. Legal guidance during a family matter should feel the same.

The practice opened on Silom Road with a single focus: family law, handled carefully. Over the years, the team has worked with Thai nationals, expatriate couples, and international families navigating everything from first consultations and parenting arrangements to formal court proceedings. The approach has remained consistent throughout — listen first, explain plainly, and move at a pace the client can follow.

Every matter at Ruan Law is treated as involving real people in a difficult period, not as a file to be processed. That distinction shapes how we communicate, how we structure our work, and how we measure whether we have done well.

Our Mission

What We Are Here to Do

Family matters — separation, parenting arrangements, formal proceedings — arrive in people's lives unexpectedly. The law surrounding them can feel inaccessible, and the process itself can be exhausting. Ruan Law exists to change that experience.

Our mission is to make family law comprehensible and navigable for every client who walks through our door, regardless of their background or familiarity with legal processes. We do this by explaining things plainly, updating clients at each meaningful stage, and treating their wellbeing as part of the service.

Our Standards

How We Work

Our working standards reflect both legal requirements and the particular sensitivities of family matters.

Thailand Bar Compliance

All practitioners at Ruan Law hold current licences from the Lawyers Council of Thailand and comply with the full professional conduct requirements of Thai legal practice.

Client Confidentiality Protocol

Every detail shared with our team — in consultations, correspondence, or proceedings — is handled under strict confidentiality. Files are stored securely and accessed only by assigned practitioners.

Personal Data Protection

We operate in compliance with the Thailand Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA). Client data is not shared with third parties without explicit consent, and retention periods are clearly defined.

Plain-Language Standard

All advice and correspondence is written in clear, accessible language. Legal jargon is explained wherever it appears. Clients should always understand what has been said and why.

Timely Communication

We respond to client enquiries within one working day. Significant developments in a matter are communicated as soon as they arise — not held until a scheduled meeting.

Continuous Professional Development

Our team participates in ongoing training in Thai family law developments, mediation techniques, and client communication — ensuring advice reflects current legal standards.

Our Values

What Shapes Every Engagement

Family law in Thailand covers a wide range of matters — from the dissolution of registered marriages and parenting arrangements for children to property settlements and the recognition of foreign decrees. These matters are legal in nature, but their effects are deeply personal. Ruan Law was built on the understanding that legal guidance in this space should account for both dimensions.

Clients who come to us are often dealing with uncertainty for the first time. They may not know what their rights are, how Thai courts approach parenting matters, or what a realistic outcome looks like. Our first responsibility is to answer those questions honestly, without overstating what is possible or understating what may be difficult.

Transparency runs through everything we do. We explain fees before work begins. We describe timelines in terms of realistic ranges, not optimistic forecasts. When a matter becomes more complex than anticipated, we say so — and we explain what that means for the client before proceeding.

We also recognise that family law in Thailand increasingly involves international dimensions. Couples from different countries, expatriates resident in Bangkok, and families with assets or arrangements spanning borders all face additional layers of complexity. Our team is equipped to navigate these situations and to explain where Thai jurisdiction applies and where it does not.

Ruan Law does not take on matters outside family law. This focus is deliberate. It allows us to develop deep, current knowledge in a field that changes regularly, to maintain a team culture oriented around the particular sensitivities of family proceedings, and to serve clients more effectively than a general practice could.
